Communicating to Students

Without communicating and engaging with students, it will be difficult to collect feedback from them. Plus, they will not know to approach you and to inform you about issues. Communicating with your cohort ensures that students understand what you do as a rep and what you can do for them. You are the link between students and staff to improve student experience. Consider the following ways to engage with your students and update them on what you’re working on:

  • Ask your lecturer for some time at the beginning/end of your online lectures to introduce yourself or inform students of an upcoming survey (for example).
  • Organise Teams meetings/catch ups – these could be constructive or have the purpose of building community.
  • Organise a focus group to discuss an issue within the department and brainstorm possible solutions before presenting these to departmental staff.
  • Send emails/e-newsletters to students with updates on what you’re working on.

If you have made it to the end, thank you very much for your commitment to your volunteer role! Now you have finished, check that you:

  • Have understood the 5 Rs of Representation
  • Have understood how to effectively collect feedback from students
  • Feel familiar with negotiation techniques to apply in meetings with staff
